AU: The Shiner

It was recess for the kindergarten through four grade students. For this school, the street was closed for the kids to play. The very small children played giant sing-song games while handing hands and walking in a giant circle. The older children played games, like tags and catch, in smaller groups.

One group of older kids contained a pair of twins and their brunet haired friend. The trio played catches to together, though one of the boys wasn't tossed the ball as much for some reason. On one of the throws, done by the other twin, the brunet girl missed a catch. She went off to follow the ball, a trip that led her to a familiar face.

"Hey Toni!" The smiley ten year old girl said. " Wanna play catch with my friends and-" She gasped, dropping the ball in the process. "What happened to your eye?!"

The eleven year old brother was often covered in band aids but it was unheard of for his right eye to be blackened. He laughed it off his sister's exclamation. "Don't worry, hermana, I just got in an argument."

"That must have been a rough argument!" She frowned. "Mom's gonna get so mad at you for getting in a fight and then she's gonna the other kid in school too."

Antonio's smile faltered a little as he waved his hands in defense. "No, no, no, mama can't know about it! You can't tell mama, si?"

She folded her arms. "With that shiner? Mom will found out anyways."

"Not if you help cover for me," he smiled. When her sister's expression didn't change, he started to pled a little. "Please, hermana! I don't wanna mama to get involved! I can handle my own problems!"

She sighed. "Fine, I'll help. Just don't get into more fights, Kay?"

Antonio gave his little sister a huge hug. "Mucho gracias, hermanda!"

She broke the hug and picked up her ball. "I gotta go back to catch with my friends. Don't into anymore trouble. Who was the guy who gave you the shiner?"

He shrugged. "Just some kid named Arthur. He'll get worse the next time he picks a fight with me!"

"Yeah he will!" She smiled. "Tell him if he picks on you again, I'll kick his butt!"

"Then it would be worse! I'd hate to have the wrath of Rosie upon me!" He laughed. "But really, hermanda, stay away from that jerk, okay?"

She nodded."Kay! I'll see you later!"

The siblings said their 'goodbyes for now' and went back to their friends. While their recess encounter didn't last long, that conversation would continue for years. It would go from the sister threatening to hurt someone she didn't know to the brother making fun of said someone to the both of them just blaming everything on said someone and to the two talking smack about someone only one of the kids has actually met.
